Sir,

I have laid before the Lords Commissioners of

His Majesty's Treasury Mr. Ellis' letter of the 4th

ultimo, (72765/30) and the enclosed copies of the

Hong-Kong Companies Amendment Ordinance 1929 and Report

by the Attorney General explaining the objects and

reasons of the Ordinance.

It is observed that under the Ordinance as

passed by the Legislative Council no limitation of

residence attaches to the Branch Registers. Under British

law shares held on a London register of a China Company

will constitute assets legally situate here and liable to

British estate duty on the death of a shareholder wherever

he may have been domiciled, whether in Great Britain,

Hong-Kong itself or elsewhere.

It is understood that there is in Hong-Kong
